who we are
Rebuilding Together * Howard County is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to helping elderly and/or disabled low-income homeowners, and families with children through home renovation and repair. Our goal is to keep people living in warmth, safety, and independence, while helping to build better communities in Howard County. Many of our neighbors have worked all their lives and have been physically and financially able to maintain their homes in good condition. Now due to illness, the loss of a spouse, aging, and/or economic hardships, they are unable do the repair work themselves and their homes deteriorate or become unsafe. Rebuilding Together works to provide home repairs to those in need. All repairs are free to the homeowners. Labor and supplies are donated or purchased by the local program. Homeowners and able-bodied family members are asked to welcome the volunteers into their homes and work alongside them in the spirit of neighbor-helping-neighbor. Again, this year we will moving countless gallons of paint, boxes of nails, lumber, roofing material, sealant, pipes and even fixtures, such as stoves, bathtubs and stall showers. Some materials are donated, others purchased -- often at wholesale prices. The average cost of the material for each home renovation is underwritten by sponsoring businesses. Rebuilding Together offers an amazing opportunity for charitable giving – for every $1.00 we receive in donation, we are able to give the equivalent of $4.00 back to the community each workday! A $15,000 donation is equivalent to $60,000 dollars of Rebuilding Together labor and materials on Workday! our mission The mission of Rebuilding Together * Howard County is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly and disabled and families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence. our vision To preserve and revitalize communities- one home, one neighborhood, one community at a time. our core values We are committed to helping low-income individuals and families with respect of their integrity, dignity and assets to strengthen lives, homes and communities.
our impact in Howard County Rebuilding Together preserves and revitalizes houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly and disabled and families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence. Our goal is to make a sustainable impact in partnership with the community. What We Do Low-income elderly and disabled homeowners and families with children often have no place to turn when the roof begins to leak or the front steps crumble. Our goal is to preserve these houses and neighborhoods and assure a warm, safe and dry home for people in need. Homeownership stabilizes and strengthens communities. Whom We Help The number of low-income homeowners increases each year. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities such as food or medicine and a roof that does not leak. Disabled homeowners cannot afford the modifications that allow them to “age in place” and remain in their own homes. Rebuilding Together works to ensure that as many of those families as possible do not have to make these difficult choices. Individual families are referred to us through neighborhood associations, churches, synagogues, community organizations and service groups or by self-referral. Non-profit facilities are also eligible for our services. When We Work Our volunteer effort culminates on National Rebuilding Day, typically held the last Saturday in April. Legions of volunteers come together to rehabilitate homes and non-profit facilities. Homeowners and volunteers work together to preserve and revitalize the communities in which they live. Who Volunteers Anyone can volunteer! And Rebuilding Together needs people with many talents and abilities — from people who can help scrape paint to those who are trained craftsmen. Business executives, students, bus drivers, politicians and policemen pitch in annually to help build better communities. Tradespeople are always in demand and hundreds of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, and others with special skills donate their time.
